When I was in middle school in the 2000s, girls in my class were OBSESSED with Gir for whatever reason and had his face on anything. I couldn’t find out why for myself because my parents wouldn’t let me watch Invader Zim.
The OG show was cruel and cynical with most of the punchlines being about demise brought about through obliviousness. All that was in contrast to it's cute art style and occasional spontaneity, which probably helped it click with more people.
I wish the old YouTube playlist with 22 of the 27 episodes didn't have most of it's content blocked or taken down so you could witness a chunk of Zim's glory. It was a good show.
